Note from the director of Sight Unseen
As a director for Sirius Idaho Theatre, I love waking up to mornings like
this. It¹s the second week of the run of our latest play, Sight Unseen, by
Donald Margulies. Although last night¹s performance was attended by very few
audience members, they were wonderfully responsive. One audience member, Jim
Prall, called me on the phone this morning to tell me about his experience.
Here¹s what I found out:
Jim Prall, who rarely manages to get out for an evening, woke up several
times in the middle of the night with ³giggles of moral outrage.² Jim was
excited that he had lost sleep after seeing the performance, that he woke up
thinking about the issues raised by the play. He spoke with me about the
ambiguity of moral dilemmas and told me that Sight Unseen brings up the
ambiguity of ethics better than anything he¹s seen the past year.
Prall shared these observations about the play. He recognized the decade of
the 70's so well. ³It is precisely a rehash of the politics then, when women
were ignored. All of the women's issues are so clear in that play. Sight
Unseen revisits the hot button issues of the 70's, if not now, in terms of
who we were and who we are and who we claim we want to be. It¹s explores the
moral and ethical dilemmas, focusing more on the personal than political.²
As many of you have probably read by now, I cast a non-actor into the lead
role of Jonathan Waxman. Wonder how¹s he¹s doing now that the play is in its
second week? According to Prall, if he saw the actor on the street, he would
definitely call him Jonathan, the name of the artist in the play. Jim says
the truth teller in the play is Grete, the German woman interviewing
Jonathan Waxman about his art. It is through her probing questions that we
begin to explore our own understanding of Art.
Hope to see you after the play!

Sight Unseen is the story of an American mega-artist so successful he's had
the obligatory profile in Vanity Fair and can claim astronomical prices for
his works sight unseen from a waiting list of wealthy patrons. In England
for a retrospective of his paintings, the artist goes into the countryside
to visit his original muse and lover, the "sacrificial shiksa" whom he
abandoned in his quest for the opulent life which now devours him. Donald
Margulies won the Pulitzer Prize in 2000 and Sight Unseen won the Obie Award
for best new American Play in 1992.
"you can tell when a play has gripped its audience, for no one seems to
breathe, let alone shift in his seat. This phenomenon can be observedat
Sight Unseen...." NY Times.
Sight Unseen contains language that may offend some audience members.
