Wednesday, February 20, 2008, 7:30pm, 1912 Center, 3rd and Adams, in
Moscow
YELLOWSTONE GRIZZLY BEARS; Jennifer Fortin, Washington State University
PhD student
Dr. Charles T. Robbins, renowned wildlife nutritionist,
established Washington State University's Bear Center Research,
Education, and Conservation Program in 1986. Since the center's
beginning, research has been conducted both at the facility and in field
situations located in Alaska, Montana, and Wyoming. Current research at
WSU includes cardiologist Dr. Lynne Nelson who is studying heart
function in four hand-raised grizzly bears. In Yellowstone National Park
graduate students Jennifer Fortin and Justin Teisberg are looking at how
the decline of important food resources, such as cutthroat trout and
Whitebark pine nuts, are affecting habitat use, diet selection, and
population dynamics of both grizzly and black bears. These are just a
few of the many studies currently being conducted through the WSU's Bear
Center.
The program is FREE and open to the public. Everyone is
welcome.
