Dear Parents,
We are at the end of the third quarter and students are working hard to complete projects, assignments, and tests. The last day of the quarter is this Thursday, and there is no school for MJHS and MHS students this Friday, April 2, only. The day is scheduled as a work/grading day for MJHS and MHS teachers. All MSD elementary students have no school on Thursday and Friday, April 1 & 2.
Earlier this year we asked for parent help to monitor Internet usage at home. Of concern at the time was inappropriate usage of social networking Websites. Once again, we have learned that some of our students are making up social networking WebPages for other students without their permission as a form of harassment. We have worked with some students who are being harassed even though the activity is not happening at school. We are involved and will attempt to help as much as possible because the issue has started to carry over into the school day. It is important to note that students are blocked and have no access to social networking sites at school. Please monitor your son or daughter's Internet use and help them make good decisions about social networking while online. If you are unable to monitor on a consistent basis, there are several software tools that you can purchase that give you the flexibility to view complete historical activity. We have heard that "PCPandora" is one of several good monitoring tools.
The ninth grade Spring Dance is finally upon us. It will take place in the MJHS Multi-Purpose Room this Friday night from 7-10 p.m. Only MJHS ninth grade students and their pre-invited and approved guests are eligible to attend this event. This dance is advertised as a "dress-up" activity, and it is important to note that MJHS does not endorse expensive clothing and activities such as formals, tuxedos, limo rentals, expensive restaurant meals, etc. If you would like to chaperone this dance, please contact Kevin Hill via email or school phone.
Our annual mandated Idaho Standards Achievement Test season begins on April 12 and ends on April 23. During the two week session, we will give over 2100 different tests to all students at MJHS. Seventh and ninth graders will take a Science, Math, Language, and Reading test. Eighth graders will take everything except a Science test. We will be on a special schedule during the testing session and it is posted on the "Principal's Page" at the MJHS website for planning purposes. The advice we give during this session is to make sure your son or daughter gets plenty of sleep and hearty breakfasts before testing days.
Speaking of food, our school meal program is an incredible deal for students. Our school Nutritionist, Mimi Pengilly works hard to provide healthy and appealing meals for all of our district's students and the following information from her gives important information to you regarding the program.
In the breakfast program we offer a rotation of menu items throughout the week, including a main entrée and choices. All of our cereals are whole grain cereals. We offer whole grain toast and homemade muffins with at least 50% whole wheat. The pancakes, waffles and French toast also include whole grains. We offer fresh fruit as a choice to 100% fruit juice everyday. We continue to offer foods like coffee cake on a limited basis because they are student favorites but do not fit the nutrition standards and cannot be offered everyday.
The lunch program has seen many changes. We comply with the nutrition standards that limit how often we can offer prefried foods. We can continue to offer these foods, but not as often during each week. As we have featured for the past several years, there is a main menu each day and other entrée choices to fit student preferences. All meals come with side dishes including a fresh veggie bar, fresh fruits, and 1% white and fat-free chocolate milk. We have decreased how often we serve chips or prefried potatoes with the lunches. When we do serve chips, they are whole grain or baked chips. Many foods are now made with whole grains, including the pastas, tortillas, pizza crust, burrito shells, even the corn dog batter. We have introduced new foods to the menu this year including Turkey Carnitas (shredded turkey tacos) and Mandarin Chicken with rice and stir fried veggies. Low sodium turkey breast is used in the sandwiches. We continue to make many of the entrees in our school kitchens and still bake rolls from scratch. The nutrient averages are posted on the bottom of the menus each month. These show that the meals provide enough calories, vitamins, minerals and fiber for the growing student, with limited amounts of sodium, and fat.
As always, please feel free to contact us anytime if you have questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Dale Kleinert, Principal
