Dear Parents,

The minutes of the March 2008 PST meeting are attached.

Do you regret that the early-morning PST meetings do not fit in with your
schedule? Would you attend meetings if they were held at a more convenient
time? What time would that be?

We'll be addressing the PST meeting time at our May meeting. Please come if
you would like to contribute to the discussion, or email me with your
comments and suggestions at peggy at jenkinsresearch.com.

Regards,

Peggy Jenkins

Meeting Minutes

March 4, 2008

Principal's Report:

*	High School Redesign - have to offer more math and science because
of the new graduation requirements, and this will impact how to offer
electives. A committee was formed, and visitations were made to different
schools. There are two options: a. Offer one schedule one day and the
other half the other day. It does leave room for electives, but there is
also 18% less instructional time.b. Use the existing schedule. The
committee also looked at reconfiguration to bring the 9th graders up to the
high school (800 students). There is classroom space, but there would be
problems with science classes, lunchroom, and PE. With too many barriers,
the idea was dropped.
*	Continuous Improvement Plan: On April 24, a response team will do a
site visit as a part of accreditation. The stake holder perspective is very
important with a survey of community patrons, teachers/staff, and students.
*	Can restore budget money for supplies and staffing as a result of
the lawsuit being over. With staffing, and increased .5 FTE for Social
Studies, and 1.5 for Language Arts - have created eight tutorials serving 90
kids with 7 - 8 in a class.

(Glen Segota explained that the tutorials work well, but there needs to be a
"buy-in" from the students. In his tutorial, he concentrates on getting
students to turn in their work.)

*	Trying to get schedule adjusted so kids don't need to rush through
the ISAT's this spring
*	Main events on the calendar are the Winter Activities Assembly on
March 6, 10th Grade Orientation (for 9th graders) on March 10, and 9th Grade
Orientation (for 8th graders) on March 24.

Financial Report: Peggy Jenkins - $2500 (Curtains have been purchased.)

Presentation by Dr. Cindy Bechinski: Shared form and process for course to
be added.

Traditionally, it is done from inside the district, but it doesn't have to
be. (This Process was followed for Math Enrichment 7th Grade Course, which
is new this year.)

The Timeline is: submit a course is by September 15 for the following year.
Dale gave some background. In 1993, the junior high lost the orchestra
program. Parents would go to the board to request having it reintroduced.
This is how the form developed. A new course would have to displace
something else.

The Do-It-Yourself Course went directly to Cindy and the Board because
something needed to be done to replace a prior course offering before the
school year started.

AP French has gone through the process - is approved, and Spanish in the
pipeline.

February Parent night - Wrap Up: The consensus was that it went well, and
there is interest in doing more. There will be a further debriefing of the
event later.

Curtain Report: Faye Nagler - They have been ordered!

Report from School District Liason: Lisa Morris - Talked about the computer
for Kids Program - recycled computers will be available and not based on
need. The League of Women Voters wants to hold a mock election in the fall,
but the process has changed. They may come in to the junior high and do it
here. Parent help will probably be needed.

Teacher Appreciation Event - not this month.

The next PST meeting will take place on April 1 in Room 216 at 7:15 a.m.
