Dear Parents,

This is a message from Doctor Cindy Bechinski, the Curriculum Director of
the Moscow School District.

(If you've already received this information, I apologize; I spoke to a
number of parents who said they did not receive this when I sent it on
Saturday.)

Curriculum and In-Service Days:

October 3, 4, and 5

Cindy Bechinski, Ph.D. - Curriculum Director

Parents sometimes ask, "What exactly do teachers do when my child is out of
school?"

Moscow School District is strongly dedicated to a continuous improvement
model in our instructional programs. Beginning in kindergarten all the way
through grade 12, teachers and administrators work extremely hard to provide
excellent, carefully aligned academic programs.

During these professional development days, teacher, building, and
district-level activities are offered in the areas of curriculum,
instruction, assessment, and technology. Teachers are extremely busy
working to enhance our instructional programs to improve student
achievement. Here is a basic overview of events:

*	Wednesday, October 5:

*	Subject Area Curriculum Committees: For the first part of the
morning, all teachers and administrators meet by subject area to set program
goals for the year. We have eleven committees:

. Language Arts

. Mathematics

. Science

. Social Studies

. Fine Arts: Music

. Fine Arts: Art

. Professional Technical

. Foreign Language

. Physical Education/Health

. Media and Information Literacy

. Counseling and school Psychology

*	Grade Level and Department Meetings: For the second part of the
morning, teachers meet by grade level (elementary) and department
(secondary) to discuss curriculum goals, instructional resources, and
student achievement. This year, we have a special emphasis on enhancing
our remediation/intervention programs to help students who are not attaining
proficiency.
*	School Improvement: In the afternoon, teachers work with building
principals to address specific site-based goals related to continuous school
improvement.

*	Thursday and Friday, October 6 and 7:

*	These two days afford teachers throughout Idaho the opportunity to
engage in focused professional development activities. Many teachers will
stay in town and attend one of a variety of excellent training
opportunities. Others will travel to Boise for State Department conferences
specifically related to their subject area or grade level. Here is an
overview of what is offered locally:

*	Northwest Council of Teachers of English (INCTE) and Northwest
Inland Writing Project (NIWP) Annual Conference: Moscow High School
*	Music Educators Conference: University of Idaho
*	Symposium to help Children who are deaf and Hard of Hearing:
Washington State University
*	Character Education/Virtues Project Training : Moscow School
District
*	Using the Independent Investigation Model to conduct research in the
classroom: Moscow School District
*	Special Education Student Data Management: Moscow School District

*	Partnerships in Education Conference: Lewiston High School

Providing teachers with opportunities for meaningful collaboration and high
quality professional development serves to enhance instructional expertise
and, as a result, our students benefit. Please check out our outstanding
