MJHS Principal's Letter

November 16, 2007

Dear Parents,

Our first quarter has ended, and we are rapidly approaching Thanksgiving break. Report Cards should have arrived at your door, and hopefully your son or daughter has had a successful first quarter. Along with the Report Card, you also received a "Cub Communicator", and some information concerning "methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus" better known to many of you as "MRSA". If you have any questions about "MRSA", please contact Beth Papineau, our district nurse. You can reach her by contacting the MJHS office.

Our fall "All-School Dance" was held this past Friday after school, and we would like to thank all of the parents who spent their late afternoon chaperoning this event. Over 150 students attended, and they had a great time. Events such as this would not be possible without the help of our parent chaperones. Thank you!

The Parent Support Team has just finished the latest edition of the MJHS Student Directory. You can get your copy for the price of $1.00. They will be available right after Thanksgiving in the MJHS office.

We have noticed that some of our students are bringing high caffeine drinks to school in the morning. Examples include Full Throttle, Rock Star, and Red Bull. We encourage students to not drink high caffeine drinks such as these at any time, and they definitely do not make a good combination in the classroom. These drinks also don't have the nutritional value that comes with a healthy breakfast that students need to be successful in the classroom. The following information offers healthy breakfast tips and comes from the Mayo Clinic Healthy Foods website:

Traditional breakfast fare offers many options
To make a healthy breakfast each day, choose one item from at least three of the following four food groups:

ð Fruits and vegetables. Fresh fruits and vegetables, 100 percent juice without added sugar

ð Grains. Whole-grain rolls, bagels, hot or cold whole-grain cereals, low-fat bran muffins, crackers, or melba toast

ð Dairy. Skim milk, low-fat yogurt cups or low-fat cheeses, such as cottage and natural cheeses

ð Protein. Hard-boiled eggs, peanut butter, lean slices of meat and poultry, or fish, such as water-packed tuna or slices of salmon

For a healthy breakfast on the go, munch dry, ready-to-eat cereal with a banana and drink a small carton of low-fat or skim milk. The best cereals are those that are higher in fiber. If counting calories, choose cereals that are lower in calories. Nontraditional fare counts, too. If you dislike regular breakfast foods, try something different, such as:

ð Leftover vegetable pizza

ð Fresh fruit topped with low-fat yogurt and crispy whole-grain cereal

ð Vegetables, salsa and low-fat shredded cheeses wrapped in a tortilla

ð A smoothie blended from exotic fruits, some low-fat yogurt and a spoonful of wheat germ

ð Whole-wheat crackers with low-fat cheese

ð A microwaved potato topped with broccoli and grated Parmesan cheese

The Cub Communicator that was just delivered has additional timely information that you need. If you've already thrown your Cub Communicator out, it can be found at the MJHS website. We would like to thank all parents for all of the help that has been given to our students so far this school year. Have a very happy Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,
