Hi everyone,
Our next parent group meeting is on Tuesday February 6th at 7:15 am in room 201. Here are the minutes from the January meeting.
Hope to see you on Tuesday!
- Susan Mahoney, PST chairperson
Moscow Junior High School
Parent Support team meeting
January 3, 2007

Susan Mahoney, PST chair, presiding over the meeting. The following people attended: Susan Mahoney, Faye Nagler, Joni Porter, Peggy Jenkins, Elizabeth Young, Marie Charles, Lisa Morris, Carolyn Birmingham, Glenn Segota, Dale Kleinert, Kevin Hill, Candis Donicht.

Susan welcomed everyone and introduced Superintendent Candis Donicht.

Guest Speaker:
Superintendent Donicht presented information on the recent school board approval for an increase of $1.97 million to the permanent school tax levy on March 27, 2007. The school district budget of $18.9 million is currently subsidized by a levy of $5.6 million. The last levy increase was in 2002. Levy funds support many programs ( GT, Special Education, Libraries, Team Teaching, Clubs, Extracurricular and Sports Activities, etc.), that would otherwise not be available to students. Dr. Donicht is asking staff and parents to support and promote the additional levy request. Dr. Donicht will provide more information in upcoming newsletters.

Principal Dale Kleinert:
· January is a light month for calendar activities as students move into a new semester.
· The new electronic reader boards are almost completely installed. Principal Kleinert proposed offering a $2 service to students, parents and staff wanting to pay for birthday greetings. Funds raised would go towards the new curtains in the MPR. Suggestions were made to have a donation box available at events in the MPR to also support the purchase of curtains.
January 15 – Martin Luther King Day, no school
January 18 – Drama Production MPR, 7pm
January 25 – Finals and New Semester Schedules released
January 26 – Teacher work day, no school
January 29 – New semester begins.

Vice-Principal Kevin Hill:
· Tentative dates for the “Penny Drive”, a community service project raising funds to support children with leukemia, to be held from February 26 to March 2. Last year MJHS raised almost $4000 with spirited competition between classes. Parent volunteers are needed for a “penny rolling party” proposed for March 5.
· The canned food drive was a great success with 5 truckloads delivered to the food bank. MJHS collected over 3300 cans of food.
· Students are reminded to leave expensive electronic items at home. Items lost are rarely recovered.
· A new Accelerated Language program for students in Basic English will begin in the next semester. This is a state approved language arts program. Teachers received extensive training to be able to provide this new program to students in all grades.

Box tops for education:
The box tops for education “16 Drive” will take place from Jan 16 to Feb 16. Parents volunteers are needed to count the collected tops on February 20 (Susan Mahoney proposed a meal be provided to encourage attendance). Proceeds will go to replacing the curtains in the MPR.

Staff Appreciation:
The next staff appreciation event will be February 7 coordinated by Marie Charles and Peggy Jenkins.

The next PST meeting will be Tuesday, February 6, at 7:15 am in room 201.
