Dear Parents,

The beginning of our spring semester has been an incredibly busy and
productive time. I can't believe that the jazz festival is already
over, and we are still slipping and sliding on the ice. I know that
I'll be happy when I don't have to worry about falling on the ice and
breaking my bones.

Our biggest news item right now is the "Parent Portal". Recent mailings
to you and news releases in the local newspaper have given you
information about how you can view your child's progress on the
Internet. Seventh grade parents have received a reminder letter with
the Username and Password this last week, and eighth and ninth grade
parents will receive their reminder letter later this week. The first
letter was mailed with Report Cards in late January.

The MJHS staff has worked hard to make the Parent Portal a valuable tool
for you to view progress and communicate that progress with your child.
We believe the information to be accurate, but if you have a question
about a grade, or see something that just doesn't look right, please
communicate with your child and have them ask the teacher about the
grade. Most teachers have also entered valuable descriptive information
at the top of each class report screen that will answer most of your
questions. If you still have questions, please contact the teacher as
you've always done.

You might notice that a "zero" is appearing from time to time on an
assignment even though your child assures you that they've turned it in.
Teachers use every spare minute they have to grade and enter progress in
the grade book, and they might not have time to enter all assignments in
one session. We have found that if an entire bank of grades is not
entered at the same time, the ones that aren't entered will show up as a
"zero" until the grade is entered. If your child assures you that
he/she turned in an assignment, please check back on the second or
fourth Tuesday of each month for an updated progress report that should
give you a complete report. Please remember that long-term assignments,
late work, etc., may not be entered immediately.

If you don't have Internet access, please contact one of our counselors
at the school. We have installed a special computer for parents to use
in our Counselor Center, and we welcome anyone to use this computer
terminal to view progress.

Our annual Pennies for Leukemia fundraiser is starting this Monday.
Students will be competing in classrooms to raise money for this worthy
cause. MJHS has consistently been the top fund-raising school in the
northwest U.S., and we hope to continue with this tradition this year.
Your child may be asking you if they can raid the coin drawers for
pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. You can also make a donation
using cash or checks. If you write a check, please make it payable to:
Leukemia Society of America.

Jazz Festival is always a big event in the Moscow School system. Our
facilities turn into a hotel for multiple visiting schools, our
buildings are used as performance sites, and this year almost 200 of our
own students performed during the week. The MJHS Jazz Band and Select
Choir did a fantastic job. The Select Choir came away with a first
Runner Up trophy, and our own Avarie Skinner won the solo competition in
her category. We congratulate everyone on their fine performances.

Even though we're still slipping around on the ice, spring sports are
beginning. Ninth baseball and softball tryouts are underway, and 9-12
track and golf has begun. Seventh and eighth grade track will begin on
March 19th. We hope to have lots of students participating in all of
these activities. Please contact Dick Leander at 882-3577 any afternoon
for additional information.

You are invited to attend a Public Forum on Tuesday, February 27 from
6:30-7:30 p.m., at the MJHS Music Room. Information will be presented
on the District's proposal to increase the Supplemental Levy at an
election to be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2007. The public is invited
to discuss the levy proposal and ask questions.

Until next time, take care and be sure to call if you have any questions
or concerns.

Sincerely,

Dale Kleinert, Principal

Moscow Junior High School
