Dear Parents,=20
=20
As I write this letter, our teachers are finishing up three
very productive days of training to help all of our students be more
successful. Some of our teachers attended the state Math conference
that was held in our building, some attended the English conference that
was being held at Moscow High School, and others attended the "Virtues
Project". The "Virtues Project" is a nationally known method of simple
ways to create a culture of character that our school community has
embraced. The staff members that are attending are excited about
creating a school environment that is even friendlier.
As part of my own training, I was able to listen to our
state Superintendent of Public Instruction, Marilyn Howard, who spoke at
the Math Conference. She is always positive and focuses on the children
of Idaho. Her message focused on teaching students in a way that will
help them "think" creatively. =20
Recently, you may have heard about the Idaho Secondary
School Reform Initiative. A Governor's Task Force has recommended that
more rigor and relevance be added to our schools. Changes would include
four years of high school mathematics, three years of laboratory
science, and a P.E. requirement, along with increased junior high/middle
school requirements. All course requirements would be aligned with the
Idaho State Standards. As Marilyn Howard stated, we need to think "out
of the box" in order to help all children succeed. Four years of
Mathematics, including Algebra II may not be the best option for all
students, and we will need to think of creative ways to help all of our
students succeed in a student centered program. Opportunities for input
are coming, and your input is critical. The nearest hearing will be
held in Lewiston on October 18th at 6:30 p.m., at the LCSC Williams
Conference Center. For more information, please contact me at any time.
We've had some illnesses in our student and staff population
this past couple of weeks. What to do about schoolwork while sick is
always a question asked of us. Upon request to the office, teachers
will provide homework and/or makeup assignments for students who miss
three or more days. The parent should make the request to the office
staff early on day three, and the assignments can be picked up in the
office about 4:00 p.m. Students who are absent fewer than three days
should take advantage of the time to rest and recuperate. If they feel
up to doing some work, they should contact a classmate for the
assignment, or do some light reading until they return to school.
Teachers will give time for make up.
Seventh and eighth grade students will again be receiving
Progress Reports on Tuesday, October 18th. These reports are coming two
weeks before the end of the quarter, and they will give students and
parents a chance to see what must be done before the first quarter
report cards are delivered to your mailboxes. Included with the
progress reports will be information about how you can be involved with
the student led parent conferences that are coming at the end of the
quarter, on November 3 and 4.
We hope that your child's experience at MJHS continues to be
positive. If we can help in any way, please contact us at any time.
