Dear Parents,=20
=20
This has been an active few weeks. First of all, I'd like to thank all
of the parents that helped chaperone the Fall Dance. We had a large
turnout, and Assistant Principal Kevin Hill reports that things went
very well. Our students were well-behaved and had a great time. We
would also like to thank the parents that stopped by last week with
breakfast and a smile. We were treated to lots of delicious pastries,
fruit, and quiche! We are feeling very spoiled, but it is appreciated
by everyone. =20

Our Veteran's Day Assembly was a big success. Mr. Tom Anderson, former
MJHS teacher, and retired Navy officer spoke to us about the importance
of the dollar bill in our history. He related the dollar bill to our
country's freedom. We projected a dollar bill on a huge screen and he
showed us how the artwork on the bill shows us that our country is a
nation of peace, but it also shows us that we will protect our freedom
and peace in the time of war. We also were addressed by Brigadeer
General William H. McCoy who is heavily involved in rebuilding efforts
in Iraq. While he was not able to attend our ceremony, he sent us a
letter and powerpoint that showed the positive efforts to help the
people of Iraq. Our own MJHS Wind Ensemble also performed the Star
Spangled Banner and two other patriotic pieces of music. It was a very
memorable event for our students and staff.
=20
The 8th grade ambassadors attended the Youth Summit on Oct 14, along
with other 8th graders from neighboring schools. The purpose of the
summit is to promote factors in each school which would make our school
a safer and more comfortable place for students. In order to do this,
the ambassadors (14 of them) will develop and implement an action plan
for MJHS for this school year. Right now, we are in the process of
brainstorming our action plan. We try to meet once every week to once
every other week. These 14 students applied for and were chosen last
spring for the 05-06 school year.
=20
The MJHS Environmental Action Club is eligible to win $25,000 in a
recycling competition sponsored by Staples. You can help by bringing
used inkjet and laser cartridges to the MJHS office. The club will also
receive $3 per cartridge, so even if our students do not win the grand
prize, they will raise money to support Environmental Action Club
activities. The contest ends next April.
=20
If history repeats itself, the next few weeks will fly by. Seventh
grade students will be receiving progress reports before Thanksgiving.
Eighth and ninth grade students who are deficient in any class will be
receiving deficiency reports the week of November 28. All reports will
arrive via US mail.
=20
Also, on November 29th, our 8th grade students will be taking the state
required Direct Math Assessment, and on November 30th, the 7th and 9th
grade students will be taking the Direct Writing Assessment. We will be
on an altered schedule for those two days in order to properly
administer those tests.
=20
Just recently I had the opportunity to see five school buses take about
160 of our Band, Orchestra, and Choir students to their fall music
festival. When they returned from the event, which was held in
Craigmont, they were proud of their performances and showed once again
that Moscow is the "Pride of the North". They also had the opportunity
to listen to, and learn from other groups throughout our region.
=20
Our seventh grade students will be going on a fieldtrip December 9th.
They will be traveling to Coeur D' Alene to view the eagles. This is
part of an integrated curriculum unit that has been very successful over
the years. If you are a 7th grade parent and have not received the
information needed, please ask your son or daughter if they have a
permission slip for you to sign.
=20
This is Thanksgiving week. Students will be in school Monday and
Tuesday of this week, and then on holiday break until Monday. The
teachers will still be in school on Wednesday. Their time will be spent
researching, reviewing, and planning for your children. These days are
very important for our teachers, as the time gives them a chance to
update and give the best they can for the children of our community.
=20
I hope that you have a restful and enjoyable Thanksgiving break. As I
think about this school, the students, and our teachers, I realize that
I am very lucky and have much to be thankful for. We live in a great
and very supportive community.
=20
Happy Thanksgiving,
=20
Dale Kleinert, Principal
Moscow Junior High School
