Moscow Junior High Support Team Minutes
The meeting on January 11 was attended by Jeanne
Leffingwell, Jill Maxwell, Patty Brandt, Mary Jo Van
Gerpen, Erin McCall, Deb Bartlett, Susan Mahoney,
Tammy Summers, Dale Kleinert, Marie Miller, D.A.R.E.
Officer, and the members of the Facility Planning
Committee - Lori Maxwell, teacher at Lena Whitmore,
Erik Perryman, teacher at Moscow High and Bill
Marineau, principal at West Park School, and Dr.
Donicht, School Superintendent.

Facilities Planning Report
Lori Maxwell led the discussion and summarized the
three tracks the committee is considering. Excellent
handouts on the three tracks were passed out at the
meeting. September 2005 is the cutoff point to
"synchronize" the current bond with a future bond.
Spring 2005 would be the best possible time to run a
bond election to minimize fluctuation of taxes. The
Committee's timescale is to make its recommendations
to the School Board in February. On February 22, the
Board will vote on the final plan and levy amount. On
April 26, the bond levy election will take place.

If they would do the "No New Construction Track,"
there would be four phases for the high school. Two
blocks of property adjacent to the high school would
need to be purchased. Portable classrooms would need
to be used, some being used on the district's Joseph
St. property. Paradise Creek Regional High School
could possibly be relocated to the old high school
annex. Adequate off-street parking would be a major
concern. The last phase would end in 2010 for the high
school. West Park, Russell, the junior high, Lena
and McDonald elementary schools would all be
remodeled. Lena and McDonald would be remodeled
starting in 2012.

There was a discussion as to whether Ghormley Park
would be built upon for West Park expansion and the
trees taken out. Since this area tends to flood, Bill
Marineau, didn't think this would be a good idea.. A
parent wondered as to the feasibility of buying the
1912 building and building a skywalk from it to the
high school.

The "New High School Option" builds the new high
school at the Trail property site near Good Samaritan
Village, remodels West Park and Russell, and uses the
old high school as Paradise Creek Regional High
School/Vo Tech with the county leasing the 1991 Annex.

The "New Elementary and New High School Option" builds
a new elementary at the Joseph St. site, remodels West
Park, builds a new high school on the Trail property,
and locates Paradise Creek Regional High School at
Russell.

A question was asked as to whether the electrical
upgrade needed for Moscow Junior High had been built
into any of the plans; it has not. There was a
discussion on how expensive this would be and how much
work it would entail. Also, it was brought up that
four new classrooms could be added easily to Moscow
Junior High at not that great a cost.

More detailed information is available at the
District office, or from any Facilities Committee member.

Next Family Night
The next family night will be on February 8 at 6:00 in
the school cafeteria. We will be doing it jointly
with the high school and the topic will be on drug
awareness. Charlie Gerke, MHS Drug Free Coordinator
and Marie Miller, Moscow Police Dept. DARE Officer
will team teach it. We will see if we can get Casey
Green's drug paraphanelia kit for display and also
have the fatal vision goggles available from 5:30 to
6:00 for people to try.

Erin McCall is working on obtaining a sponsor for the
family night. We are also working on finding someone
to donate something for the Family Raffle. Dale
mentioned that when we have people sponsor our family
nights we need to make sure that the evening's topic is not an
advertisement for them but at the same time give them
credit for their donation. Another idea was to have
the program talked up on the Steve Shannon radio show
on FM 106. Marie volunteered to go on with one other
person from the support team.

Other assignments for the night are as follows:
Coordinate teachers-Dale, Order Pizza-Erin, Get Drink
from McDonalds-Tammy, Salad-Mary Jo, Prizes-Tammy,
Family Raffle-Erin.

Next Meeting
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 1st, at
7:15 in Room 201.

The mission of the MJHS Parent Support Team is to
promote and enhance the well being and educational
experience of our children by coordinating and
promoting parental involvement and providing support
for teachers, staff, and volunteers.
