Dear MJHS Team,
Here are several opportunities that may be of interest to you (these are =
from bulletin announcements which are read 2nd period):
1. Attention Writers and Readers: Save Saturday, November 6 for the NW =
Inland Writing Project Young Authors' Conference! Keynote speaker is =
Katy Robinson, author of books for young adults. Her memoir, A Single =
Square Picture is the unforgettable account of a young Korean adoptee's =
search for her roots. She knows what it's like to straddle two =
cultures. The conference is at MJHS from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and =
the $18.00 fee gets you the full workshop day plus a copy of her book =
and a t-shirt. The book alone retails for $13.95--what a deal! Check =
with Mrs. Tragesser in Room 115 or your English teacher for a packet. =
(Additional note--you may want to visit the website =
http:/wwwasinglesquarepicture.com for more information including reviews =
of the book.)
2. Here's an opportunity to talk with nationally acclaimed poet Robert =
Wrigley about his work and the craft of poetry. Using some of his own =
work, he'll talk about what a poem is, how it comes into being, and how =
to deal with it on the page. Wrigley, a nationally recognized poet, is =
director of the UI's MFA program in creative writing. He has written =
six books of poetry and has won awards for his work. Sponsored by The =
Friends of the Moscow Library, he will speak at the library on Thursday, =
October 21 at 7:30 p.m.
3. It's still not too late to sign up for the Rocky Mountain Talent =
Search (RMTS). I announced this in the bulletin at school a month ago, =
and several students have taken packets of information. Anyone may take =
the ACT or SAT college entrance exam early, but the RMTS targets =
students (grades 5-9) who are academically talented. For more =
information, stop by Room 115 for a packet or visit their website at =
www.rockymountaintalentsearch.org for information about their summer =
institute. It is still possible to take the January through June =
tests.=20
If you have questions about these opportunities, please give me a call =
at the junior high.

Closed circuit to parents -- This morning, MJHS participated in a =
building lock-down drill. We were on our homeroom time schedule and let =
students and teachers know about the drill, in advance. After we locked =
all rooms down, we utilized our telephone paging feature and directed =
clusters of rooms to evacuate to designated areas. From all accounts, =
our students followed instructions and moved calmly to the new location. =
Our office staff, our superintendent and Moscow PD observers were =
impressed with the responsiveness of students and staff. Once we had =
all students accounted for, we had everyone return to class to resume =
the rest of the day's schedule.
As you might visit with your son or daughter over the day's drill, we =
would be interested in hearing about any significant "glitches", =
concerns and/or suggestions from the students' point of view. We've =
also asked for their input through a special bulletin, which was read =
following the drill. I have asked staff memebers to provide their =
comments, also, so our protocol can be as smooth as possible. Some =
parents will remember that we locked down the school for 20 minutes, two =
years ago, when we had a police situation at a neighboring home. Our =
students and staff responded in an appropriate fashion. =20
We believe that our preparation and practice will help us to be ready, =
if and when an emergency situation might develop.
