Our committee’s list serve is an incredible success. I’m thrilled to see the committee members’ level of participation and animated discussions. I recognize that many of our members are good friends and occasionally joke with one another in their list serve postings. However, some of our readers may not recognize the joke. While I know that Harry and Leonard love and respect each other, the casual reader of our list serve may not. Please try to keep the list serve discussions profession and focused solely on legal issues. Discussions that veer into other areas should be handled via direct email and not on the list serve.

Thank you for the feedback Please do not take offense. I am dealing with a death in the family. I wasn’t trying to direct my comments directly at you although it reads that way and I apologize. I have begged to be on the housing coloration but they will not have me because I am not a not for profit. You really don’t want me in Tallahassee. I would advocate for legalize self help evictions ☺. Alice Vickers is my voice in Tallahassee. I read all the drafts, make lengthy comments to many bills and you don’t have to tell me what goes into a bill isn’t what comes out. It reminds me of food. It looks good going in and you know what it looks like when it comes out. I don’t hold you responsible. ☺. I also did my share of lobbying when I worked in DC. I also do not advocate a complete rewrite of the statute but I would like to see a little fairness put into Chapter 83. (as I said the biggest violators are exempt and no penalties, these are not your clients). I don’t think you will have to work hard to succeed on defeating the uniform act. As for my cars, I used to love to fix them. I was six tenths off the ¼ mile record in 1972. Now I open the hood and I see a computer so I let other people fix them. Lastly. if your goal in life is to protect landlords you are failing miserably (so far), I am still alive and still only represent tenants ☺. You have to a better job at enticing me to the other side or feed me more artery clogging White Castle Burgers!!!

Leonard,
Over my 25 years, we have made many changes to 83 that were beneficial to the landlord. If you have ever been involved in the legislative process from bill writing to seeing something get passed, you would know that the end result of a bill is often nowhere near how it started as often we must accept screwed up amendments and rewrites in order to get something passed. I don’t recall seeing you in Tallahassee each year or testifying before committees as I have done so many times.
I resent that remark you made but still love you. As for my cars, I let other people fix them.
The 4 or fewer rental exemption was done before my time as was the non-penalty for certified mail section.
My goal in life is to protect the landlord, not the tenant.
I oppose a complete rewrite and will do everything I can to stop it, and , I will succeed.

I hope you don’t fix your car like you fixed Chapter 83, it is a disaster full of knee jerk reactions that turn out to be real screw-ups. Example, 83.49 exempts landlords with 4 or fewer rentals. Those are the biggest violators of 83.49 and there is no penalty for failure to comply with any part of 83.49 except Certified Mail for intent to make a claim on security deposit. I could go on but it wouldn’t do any good.

I hope the Florida Bar strongly opposes this stupid and unnecessary complete rewrite that has been brewing and is being worked on by the Uniform Law Commission (ULC)
Many of us worked for years fixing and tweaking 83.
This would be a disaster and is completely unnecessary. The ULC needs to stay away from our statutes.
