A cooperative training presented by the U.S. Forest Service and Idaho Dept. of Lands

 

Description:  This course teaches skills in identification, biology, and life cycles of forest insects and diseases in Idaho while focusing on the role of forest insects and diseases common to the area and strategies used to manage changes they cause in forested ecosystems.  Upon completion students will: 1) understand the basic biology and life cycles of common forest insects and diseases, 2) be able to identify common forest insects and diseases and the damage they cause, 3) be familiar with use of the regional forest insect and disease field guide, 4) evaluate the effects of insects and diseases and the importance of the damage they cause, 5) be familiar with silvicultural, chemical, and biological control measures currently available to reduce insect and disease-caused damage, and 6) be familiar with the effects of insects and diseases on multiple resources in forest ecosystems.

Eligibility:  Natural resource managers from government agencies, tribes, and private industry.  Includes foresters, consultants, ecologists, hydrologists, wildlife & fisheries biologists, recreation specialists, etc.

Prerequisite knowledge:  None.

Plan to attend the entire course.  Those who leave early will not be provided a certificate-of-attendance.

 

Field trips:  These are critical elements of the session.  Be prepared for light hiking and bad weather.  

Lunch:  Bring a lunch each day.  There will not be time to go out.
