Each year the Northwest Natural Resources Institute collaborates with the US Forest Service Nursery in Coeur d'Alene to present a week-long educational program on forestry called the Model Forest. 2009 will be our 11th year for the program. We seek out volunteers to spend four hours on one day to help educate the regional sixth graders that attend the program about forestry. I am hoping that you can assist us this year in finding some volunteers. I need two individuals for a four hour shift (10:00am - 2:00pm - lunch is provided) on both Wednesday, May 20th and Thursday, May 21st. Is this something you could assist me with? I have attached a fact sheet on the program for you.
Here are the activities that the kids learn while they are working with the foresters:
· Learn about Sustainable Forestry Initiative "SFI"
· Understand the variety of products made from trees
· Learn why we need forests
· Learn why we need to cut trees
· Learn the life cycles of a forest
· Estimate the height of trees
· Core a tree and find out how old the tree is
· Learn how to calculate board feet in a tree
· Identify trees and tree diseases
We have different schools attending each day so there is no overlap on the students so you don't need to worry about repeating the topics. You can cover as many of the topics as you like or if you want to add something in, that is fine also. The schedule is:
10:15am - 11:45am - Session 1
11:45am - 12:15pm - Lunch (provided to volunteers)
12:15pm - 1:45pm - Session 2
We split the schools into two groups so you will have 1/2 of the students in the morning and the other 1/2 in the afternoon.
Thank you for your consideration in assisting with this very worthwhile program. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
