Fellowship Position

Spokane, WA

Save Our Wild Salmon (SOS) is a nationwide coalition of conservation 
organizations, commercial and sport fishing associations, businesses, river 
groups, and taxpayer and clean energy advocates working collectively to 
restore healthy, self-sustaining and abundant wild salmon to rivers, streams 
and oceans of the Pacific Salmon states.

DEFINITION:  Full-time 2 year fellowship position to build community support 
in eastern Washington and the Lewiston/Clarkston Valley for a plan to 
restore 30,000 acres of riverside habitat along 140 miles of the lower Snake 
River.  This fellowship is supported by the Wyss Foundation through the Wyss 
Fellows Program, which works to develop new leaders in the conservation 
field.  Applicants who have recently completed college or graduate degrees 
or are seeking a new career in conservation are encouraged to apply.

REQUIREMENTS:   Bachelors degree in an appropriate discipline and an 
interest in pursuing a career in conservation work. Position requires 
excellent written and oral communication, demonstrated aptitude in 
problem-solving, strategic thinking, independent judgment, time management, 
and ability to work with people of diverse rural and urban backgrounds. 
Individuals with skills and experience in any of the following backgrounds 
are encouraged to apply: conservation, economic, and public policy; GIS 
mapping, landscape architecture or design skills; experience with media, 
electoral campaigns, and coalitions; past residence in eastern Washington or 
in similar rural and small town landscapes. Experience may substitute for 
education.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·     Develop a vision and plan for restoration and public use of 30,000 
now-submerged acres of public lands and habitats along 140 miles of the 
lower Snake River in eastern Washington.

·     Build collaboration and dialogue among affected farmers, businesses, 
anglers, community leaders, and other citizens to develop and then promote 
the plan.

·     Organize meetings of local residents with state and regional 
policymakers to communicate and build support for the vision and plan.

·     Communicate with local, regional and national media representatives.

·     Collaborate closely with SOS campaign partners and coordinate with 
Native American tribes to assure treaty rights and interests are fully 
integrated.

·     Work in partnership with and under the direction of SOS' Inland 
Northwest Project director.

 Salary $37,000 - $45,000 DOE, plus full medical, dental and vision benefits
