<p class=MsoNormal>Hi All,<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>The annual PSR SAF chapter field tour was a great
success! Thanks to the efforts of Matt Engberg (Northwest Management), Bill
Higgins (Idaho Forest Group), Sister Carol Ann (St. Gertrudes), and Ciaran
Nugent (Irish Forest Supervisor) the tour was informative, engaging, and fun.
Attached are some pictures taken during the tour.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Tour Recap:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Stop 1: Bill Higgins took us on a 2-hour tour of the new
hi-tech sawmill owned by Idaho Forest Group in Grangeville. All I can say
is WOW! The automation and efficiency of this mill is truly
amazing. If you ever have an opportunity to tour this mill – do so.
It was amazing to watch computers run nearly the whole operation from
optimizing log lengths, number of dimension boards in a rough cut section,
trimming, edging, sorting, and if you can believe it – computers actually
graded the finished product! Afterwards, Bill handed out cool ball caps
to everyone – Thanks Bill!<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Stop 2: Lunch at St. Gertrudes. All I can say is
nobody came away empty. The sisters can make a great meal. Will
have to keep them in mind if we have a tour in this area again.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Stop 3: Sister Carol Ann of St. Gertrudes gave us a tour of
their 880 acre tree farm. We discussed tree mortality in the grand fir
dominated stands of the Craig Mountain/Cottonwood forested range, the role of
climate change on future forest species composition, forest landowner
collaboration on forest health and productivity, and the monastery’s philosophy
on forest management.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Throughout this part of the field tour Ciaran Nugent gave us
great overview of historical Irish forestry and current forest management
practices. It was a excellent opportunity to learn from a colleague
managing similar tree species in a different regulatory, social, and economic
environment.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Again, thanks to the tour hosts. It was a great tour –
and best of all it was free! Just one way the PSR chapter can give back
to our strong supporters of SAF.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
