<p class=MsoPlainText>The Nicholson mine (AKA Pulaski Tunnel) lies two miles
southeast of Moon Pass Road along the West Fork of Placer Creek. There is
an "escape trail" that linked the mine site to Moon Pass Road, which
was once also a trail. The mine and the trail are historic venues because they
provided "Big Ed" Pulaski and his firefighting crew a refuge and an
escape route in the midst of the "Big Blowup" -- the great 1910 fire
that engulfed much of Northern Idaho and Western Montana. Yet both the
trail and the mine site, in 2000, had become lost in overgrowth, windfall, and
inattention for almost a century. The Pulaski Project aimed to recapture
these venues and develop them into fitting historical, educational, and
recreational resources for northern Idaho and the Northwest. Even before
the trail-and-mine project truly got its feet on the ground, the board of
directors expanded its aims to include a substantial interpretive center to be
associated with the trail as well as a number of other pursuits. Now, in
the fall of 2007, the trail has been open to the public for more than two years
-- with its seven bridges, dozen porcelain historical signs, and other
accoutrements. And yet the trail is still not fully completed. For
example, the trail's destination, the mine portal, and the trail's outlook to
the mine portal still require re-creation and development. Along the way,
a number of the original goals of the project have been more or less abandoned,
and some new goals have also come along and now occupy our attentions.<o:p></o:p></p>
