The meeting on November 17 was my last meeting as Palouse/Snake River chapter chair. The program was Dean Kurt Pregitzer who gave an informative program about the future of CNR and important information on subjects such as the job possibilities for Forest Management majors, the improvement in hands on experience, and the use of the experimental forest.

Unfortunately, as usual, attendance by members was poor. Fortunately, attendance by the student chapter was very good, thanks to the efforts of Rob Keefe to turn the students out. As the Chapter Chair and an active member of SAF for over fifty years I have watched as meeting attendance has consistently changed over the years to less than 5% of members. The Inland Empire SAF has about 270 members. Considering the proportion that the Palouse/Snake River chapter has it has become common to consider ten members attending meetings good attendance. I know that the other two chapters are having the same problem. However, it is embarrassing for a chapter chair to line up a good program and then only ten or fewer members show up. If it had not been for the student attendance I would have been embarrassed.

The January meeting will be in Lewiston with Rick Brazell Supervisor of the Clearwater/Nez Perce the program. The Clearwater/Nez Perce has many very interesting problems including the proposed land exchange. A DEIS will be out this month concerning that controversial exchange. The Forest Service also is experiencing severe budget restrictions. That program promises to be very interesting especially with the recent combination of the two national forests. It will also be the first meeting with Chair Randall Walker and Chair Elect Rob Keefe in charge. They need your support. I hope that meeting will be well attended. An attendance of ten or fewer members is not acceptable to me as the retired chair.

Please watch for the announcement of this meeting to be announced the third week of January and plan on attending.
