Dear All,

Lori Rasor of Western Forester is planning/selecting the themes for 2008
and would like to get ideas from the readers. Please send ideas to
Patricia Cohn, pcohn at wsu.edu by August 10. Also, Patricia has a list
of themes from past years that may provide inspiration or help avoid
repetition. Please contact her if you would like a copy.

Thanks for your help!

The Western Forester is selecting the themes for 2008 and would like to
get ideas from the readers.

Here are a few things to consider when suggesting themes:

    * Themes for the year should support all professional specialties
and a wide range of topics to ensure all segments of the broad field of
forestry are present.

    * Theme topic needs to be able to support 4-7 articles. For
example, “Fish Passage Culvert Design” would make a better article than
theme.

    * Technical topics are generally easier to research than general
topics like “ecosystem management” or “air quality” (unless specific
article suggestions are provided).

    * When suggesting a theme, please provide potential articles/authors
that could be included/contacted, and a brief overview statement to
guide me in my theme development and research. Here is an overview
statement example: Fire and the Forest: With the 2000 fire season on
record as one of the worst, what lessons have we learned? This issue
will explore fire management policies and include statistics and
analysis from last year’s fire experience.

    * Consider themes that a broader range of decision makers and other
organizations might be interested in. For instance, the “Ecosystem
Services” issue was very popular and extra copies were provided to
non-traditional Western Forester readers for a variety of uses.

    * Be creative. We might consider a topic such as “Problem Solvers”
where articles on a variety of topics could be included.

    * Consider if theme needs to be placed at a certain time of year
(reforestation, for example).
