Subject: Close, meatspin.

The game is marketed with vaan as the main protagonist and you see everything  from his perspective.  In every other  modern ff that is the "main character" (btw. You  see  how  I have written it?) 
Of course the others are  more relevant to the  story.

Battle system possibilities  and  actual use  is quite different.
I've been almost everything  with the described set up of gambits with only some additional grinding for levels.

Character progression being the  same is  not so bad in the other games at max level since everyone still had personalized weapons and special attacks. 
Here everyone has the same. The  only  thing that  differs  are the summons you allocate yourself.

If games before had  several side quests and this one has  only the big  "go out and kill"  quest  as a side activity then  sorry. This  game  does only fight and nothing more.
No other activity here.


Yes there are other  side bosses. Mostly summons and the side quest bosses.  
They aren't  that  hard  with the appropriate level and gear.
Some need manual control, yes. However most go down with auto pilot
